What is Background Verification (BGV)?
Background verification is a check that your new employer runs after you accept a job offer. They confirm that what you wrote on your resume and application is accurate. This includes your past job titles, employment dates, educational degrees, and identity documents. Most Indian tech companies use a third-party agency to run these checks.
How It Works
BGV usually starts after you sign the offer letter. You fill out a form or an online portal with details about your past employers and education. The agency then contacts those organisations directly to confirm.
1. Identity and address check
The agency verifies your PAN card, Aadhaar, or passport. Some companies also verify your current residential address. This step is usually complete within 2 to 3 working days.
2. Employment history check
This is the most important part for tech professionals. The agency contacts your previous employers, usually through HR or a verification portal. They check your job title, dates of joining and leaving, and whether you left in good standing. Most companies check the last 2 to 3 employers. Some check all of them.
3. Education check
They contact your university or college directly to confirm your degree, year of passing, and roll number. Some universities respond in days. Others take 3 to 4 weeks. IGNOU and distance learning institutions often take the longest.
4. Criminal record check
A court record or police verification check is standard at larger companies and especially in BFSI roles. For most software and product roles, this is a basic check and rarely causes issues.
5. Reference check
Some companies ask for 2 professional references. These are usually former managers or senior colleagues. The agency or an internal HR person calls them and asks about your work style and performance.
6. Timeline
The full Background verification (BGV) process takes 2 to 6 weeks in India. Your offer may be conditional until it clears. Some companies let you start work during the check and mark you confirmed only after it passes.
Example
A candidate accepts an offer from a mid-sized product company in Bengaluru as a senior backend engineer. Three days after signing, he receives a link from AuthBridge, a BGV agency. He fills in details for his last two employers and his engineering degree from VTU. His first employer responds within a week. His second employer takes 12 days because their HR team uses a manual process. His degree check takes 18 days. He gets a clearance email on day 22. His employment confirmation letter arrives two days later.
Common Mistakes
1. Listing a wrong job title or inflated dates: If your resume says you were a "Tech Lead" but your employer's records show "Senior Software Engineer," that is a discrepancy. Small title differences sometimes pass. Bigger gaps in dates or fabricated titles can result in an offer being withdrawn.
2. Not telling your new employer about a gap or a short stint: A 4-month job you left out of your resume will show up if the agency does a thorough check. Disclose gaps and short stints early. Most employers are fine with honest explanations.
3. Ignoring the BGV portal for days: The check cannot start until you fill in your details. Delays on your side push your confirmation date further out and can delay your start date.
FAQs
Can a company withdraw my offer if BGV fails?
Yes. If a major discrepancy is found, most companies reserve the right to cancel the offer even after you have resigned from your current job. Read the conditional employment clause in your offer letter.
What counts as a BGV failure in tech hiring?
Mismatched employment dates by more than a month, a degree you listed but never completed, or a job title that your former employer does not recognise are the most common failure reasons.
Will my current employer know I am being verified?
Not unless you have already resigned. BGV agencies contact your previous employers, not your current one, until you give permission or have already left.
Does a short stint of 3 months at one company cause problems?
Not by itself. Agencies verify the dates and title. If they match your resume, a short stint is not a red flag in the BGV process. It may come up in an interview, but that is a separate conversation.
What should I do if I find a discrepancy in my own records before BGV starts?
Tell your new employer's HR team immediately. Proactively flagging a mismatch, such as a date error or a title that differs from what HR uses, is far better than having it surface through the agency.
